ASE Certified Technicians

What is An ASE-Certified Mechanic?

When you stop by your Family Tire Pros in American Fork, you may see a logo on a window or the service desk that reads “ASE Certified.” That symbol means at least one of the automotive technicians has been certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
ASE tests and endorses automotive professionals in all major technical areas of repair and service. Each year, about 100,000 technicians take the voluntary certification exam. Those who pass at least one of the exams and satisfy the work experience requirements become ASE certified.

Master Technician

The next level is Master Technician status for those who pass a battery of exams and have additional work experience. To keep their certification active, technicians must take the test every five years. All ASE credentials have expiration dates so technicians have to stay up to date on the latest technology and procedures to keep their certifications.

Specialty exams cover all major areas of automotive repair:

  • Engine repair
  • Engine performance
  • Electrical/electronic systems
  • Brakes
  • Heating & air conditioning
  • Suspension & steering
  • Manual drive train & axles
  • Automatic transmissions

Technicians tend to specialize in certain areas and can become certified in those areas. If you’re looking for help with the transmission or heating and air conditioning, ask your Family Tire Pros shop if they have a technician certified in that part of the car.

In addition, ASE also offers additional exams in other areas of automotive repair:

  • Collision repair/paint technicians
  • Damage estimators
  • Parts specialists

How do I know if a technician is ASE certified?

It’s easy to find an ASE certified technician. Service facilities that have at least one ASE certified technician on staff are allowed to display the ASE logo. Shops that have 75% of their technicians ASE certified are entitled to display the special Blue Seal of Excellence recognition. Each certified technician may wear a patch on their uniform and display a certificate in the customer service area of the shop.
